iTunes 5, I am Jack's dull surprise
Filed under: Analysis / Opinion, iPod Family, iTMS, iTunesAllow me to play devil's advocate for a moment. Or as I like to call it, the John C. Dvorak Punditry Game. I won't just be discussing iTunes 5, but all the musical announcements rolled out from Apple today.First of all, I think there's no way you're going to have another revolution on your hands as you did when the first iPod was announced. Video iPod? No, by the time that rolls around the PSP/Xbox/Dingus synergy will be there. Don't get me wrong, a video iPod will be cool and maybe sell well, but the revolution will not be telev ... Giles on ROKR and iPod Nano
blech: Giles on ROKR and iPod Nano Because I've been busy all evening taking photos of London skyscrapers and cleaning the house to try and make sure moths don't come back, we have no spool coverage. Giles mentions iTunes 5.0 but doesn't talk much about it. I have to install it (to see if Blue Coconut still works), but I'm keeping a backup of 4.7.1 handy. Hell, I didn't even like 4.9. Apparently you can nest playlists now. I wonder if it's like iPhoto - limited to one level - or truly recursive. Doug has a first look at AppleScript support. And it makes it clear it's iPhoto style single-level ... (more)

Review : Apple iTunes 5
Like all good nerds today I upgraded to Apple iTunes 5. I like it. They unveiled a flash memory based bastard child of the iPod Shuffle and the iPod Mini called the iPod Nano and the long rumored iTunes phone that came as a shock to noone. I am still not going to buy a cell phone regardless of who makes it. It is because I was beaten repeatedly as a child with a big 80s style cell phone by a yuppie with a bow tie back in 1986. Also I think cell phone use in public increases your chance of looking like an ass by ten fold but enough about my feelings about cell phone users. The EFF came out wit ... (more)

iPod nano - I dig. I want a black one.
So the iPod nano was announced yesterday and boy does it look sweet (unlike the ROKR, yuck!). I desperately want one (the nano, not the ROKR, yuck again!), but I made the mistake of purchasing an iRiver H10, which isn’t a bad DAP at all, just not as nice as the nano. Maybe I could return it? For the price I got, it was something I had to go for. 169 @ eCost, whereas other places sell the thing for $240-280. Maybe I could sell it to someone? I really want that black nano. Anyways, I think I’ve been using my PowerMac for about 4 months now. I’ve switched and I’m glad (I ... (more)

iPod Nano Still Not a Recorder; Portable Recording Alternatives [Updated]
Yet another iPod (http://www.createdigitalmusic.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=860&Itemid=44) . . . yet another iPod without real recording capability. (And no, adding a piece of hardware and then having to deal with low-resolution recording does not count.) So while Nano is certainly deeply drool-worthy for listening, wouldn't it be great to have an iPod-like device for recording? Here are some of your options: Hack your iPod. iPodLinux (http://ipodlinux.org/) unlocks full-resolution, uncompressed audio recording with no additional hardware; it works best with a li ... (more)

Samsung YH-820 5GB Jukebox reviewed (Engadget)
Tweaknews just took the Samsung YH-820 5GB Jukebox for a test drive, and they seem pretty impressed with its feature package and ease-of-use. Especially noteworthy are the diminutive size (smaller than an iPod mini) and color screen (which we can apparently expect any day now from Apple, or, um, not ). The device is no beauty queen, but for under $200 you get a photo viewer, voice recorder and

Sony and Apple collaborating on online store for Japanese iPod users? (Engadget)
Apple very conspicuously launched the iTunes Music Store in Japan last month without any Sony artists onboard, but the AFP is reporting that the two companies are in negotiations about launching a new online music download service that would let Japanese iPod users buy tracks from Sony?s Japanese catalog. Sounds like there?s something that?s either missing from the news report or that got lost
