WTF is a Podcast?

I've been talking a good bit lately on podcasting, mainly since I started my own. But I'm also aware that the casual computer user, or iTunes listener, has no clue what this mysterious new service is. So I thought I'd just explain it a little, if only to my boost listener count and flex my geek-muscles. Podcasts get their name from combining iPods with radio broadcasting. It all started when...

Dodge Intpreid Episode 3, now podcasting!

This morning we have officially released the third episode of "Dodge Intrepid and the Pages of Time." It's currently available here for download, and should be appearing on the iTunes Music Store and Podcast.net this evening. It's certainly the most exciting episode released so far, and clears up that question burning deep within you: Is Pluck going to get run over by that train? In this episode, the focus shifts...

Another subscription service? Yawn. From Yahoo!? Double yawn.

Dr. Death keeps asking me if I've checked out Yahoo's new music service. I turned my back on Yahoo a long time ago, so I don't really pay much attention to what they roll out anymore. As I recall, the final straw was when they decided to charge for me to use my email client to access my free webmail address. So my choice was to pay for email (a ridiculous idea) or slog though their slow, buggy and ad-packed web mail interface. I left and rarely looked back. Now that Google offers maps and directions, I don't use Yahoo at all. So, let's look at Yahoo's "Music Engine." Play and "save" over 1 ... (more)

Okay, del.icio.us is the coolest thing evar. Officially.

A couple of days ago I noted del.icio.us system tags. Yeah, okay, I didn't go into detail, but I also didn't have the big picture. So, okay, certain filetypes on del.icio.us get their own specific tag, for instance, .mp3's. An .mp3 gets the tag: "system:filetype:mp3," which means you can search del.icio.us for anything with that tag and find bunches of mp3's. Or movies. Or, uh, pdf's, whatever. Here's where it gets seriously sweet: del.icio.us automatically creates an RSS enclosure feed for each of those tags, so... This URL: http://del.icio.us/tag/system:filetype:mp3 will take you to a del ... (more)

The iShuffle Principle

There seems to be a lot of talk these days about a whole slew of new iPod Minis, and new iPod Shuffles, with expanded capacities. I am sure many millions will be sold, and thousands of words will be devoted to reviews, and analysis of these new devices. But, as we wait for this new Podslaught, I would like to spend a few moments on the older, first generation iPod Shuffles, and how they have taught me a life lesson. Sounds decidedly dweebish, and overtly geeky! Nevertheless, indulge me. One of the hardest exercises I had to undertake ever came a few hours after I spent $99 on an iPod Shuffle. ... (more)

The iShuffle Principle

The iShuffle Principle: One of the hardest exercises I had to undertake ever came a few hours after I spent $99 on an iPod Shuffle. I had to decide on 75 of my most favorite songs - tracks that will entertain me almost anywhere, anytime in any kind of setting. Why? With no control over what song was going to come next, it was like programming the perfect radio station, the one that could play in a non-stop loop, and be the soundtrack of life. My life. I had to choose from nearly 25,000 songs, a collection that grows by nearly an album a week. Nearly 400 gigabytes whittled down to half a gigab ... (more)

The iShuffle Principle

The iShuffle Principle: Meanwhile, Wall Street Journal Reports, iShuffle killed the Rio: Though the Shuffle was priced higher and had fewer features than some competing flash-based devices, “you’re up against a momentum play or social phenomenon,” There's a hidden assumption here that "more features" equals "better". More features sometimes means more complexity, a worse user experience, and lower customer satisfaction. How many of us actually use even 10% of the features in Microsoft Word or Excel today? Features drive hype, but don't necessarily improve the product. Then a ... (more)

iPod Nano is in store.

Apple is yet again back from the drawing boards to make us all drool with the new iPod Nano. After the iShuffle, I thought what else couold Apple add to their line of iPods? You have the iPod mini, the U2, iShuffle, and the iPod Photo which they graduated into just the 30Gb and 60GB iPod about 3 months ago. But lo and behold, the iPod Nano is here with the storage of an iPod mini (2GB and 4 GB) and the size of an iShuffle (available in white and black colors). It’s as thin as a regular pencil and just twice as heavy as the feather-weight iShuffle. Like the iShuffle, it’s light eno ... (more)

iPod Nano

Everyone close to me know that i love music. While reading, driving and even while tacking some complex logical problem at work, i will be listening to music. Even if im in a bad mood or depressed, good music can kick start and change me completely. I can associate music to different times. Like Bryan Adams will remind me of 10th Grade, Rangeela reminds me of our new car and the long drives, 'Better Man' by Robbie Williams reminds me of the painful wait for IIT results. During my student years whilst studying for my exams, i will listen to music and skim through chapters. My dad would ge ... (more)

Apple Launches Video Podcasting For iTunes

Posted by Zonk (23% noise) View phaedo00 writes “Apple has launched support for video podcasting in the Podcast section of the iTMS. Ars Technica has a decent write up of the news along with speculation on what this means in the way of a video iPod and Apple’s recent application for a patent on the phrase ‘iPodcast.’” From the article: “The quiet, fanfare-less launch (in fact, it’s not even clear when it was launched) is a bit surprising for the company, but there may be a reason: there’s not too many video podcasts out there in the wild. The Story Behind the iPod nano

Time has published an article that discusses the story behind the iPod nano. It's amazing that the Nano even made it to the stage. The story of the Nano started nine months ago, when Jobs and his team took a look at the iPod Mini and decided they could make it better. On the face of it, that wouldn't appear to be a fantastically smart decision. The iPod Mini was and still is the best-selling MP3 player in the world, and Apple had introduced it only 11 months earlier. Jobs was proposing to fix something that decidedly was not broken.

Four Ways to Make Money Podcasting

A recent article at Forbes outlines four ways to monetize podcasting. "I think it is natural to have an ad-supported model for podcasting," said GarageBand.com's Ali Partovi. "But I don't think 30-second ads will work. Ads will need to be shorter, such as even 10 to 20 seconds long. In other words, ads will need to be short enough where it does not make sense to skip them."

iPod Threats on the Rise?

Commentary: Elle Webb As the iPod's popularity has reached a frenzy, news reports on the popular music player's dangers are on the rise. News items at Podcasting News and other sites suggest that the millions of iPods "in the wild" may be exposing owners to risks worse than questionable advertising claims or blowing $15,000 at iTunes to fill up a 60GB iPod.

"Body Armor" for iPod earbuds

SendStation Systems has introduced the earBuddy carrying case for iPod earbuds. The compact case (about the size of a jewelry box) has been designed specifically with the iPod earbuds in mind, but can hold many other earbuds as well. It is coated with ballistic nylon and built to withstand 200 lbs. or 90 kg of force. The ABS frame on the inside lets you easily wind up the cable and store everything simply and safely in the smallest possible space.

User Interface Top Reason for Buying iPod

It appears that usability tops sound quality, "cool factor" and even the recommendations of friends when choosing an MP3 player. "The quality of the user interface was the primary reason why users chose the iPod over other digital music players," notes TDG's Dale Gilliam. "This finding is especially relevant given that many press and industry pundits argue that it is the aesthetics or maybe the cool factor that has made the iPod so popular."
