Shorties

The Telegraph profiles Franz Ferdinand's rise to stardom. NPR's Weekend Edition interviews Neil Young. The Village Voice interviews singer/songwriter/producer John Vanderslice. You work a lot with John Darnielle. Do you guys get in fights? We joke about that stuff all the time. If you don't think Darnielle calls me when I'm getting my Soundscan numbers--of course he does. We're always seeing who's gonna be higher on CMJ. The Guardian examines the role of the Hollywood scriptwriter and the "ambiguities of authorship" that arise when a film is released. Routinely, we commend "J Richard Sproggin ... (more)

Religious music in your brain

Carl Zimmer’s article on musical hallucinations in the July 12 New York Times, with the catchy title Neuron Network goes Awry, and Brain Becomes an iPod, was widely blogged. Less widely noted was the fact that in this study of 30 cases the music heard was religious in a surprising two-thirds of the cases; that figure includes both hymns and Christmas songs. An astonishing 20% of the subjects (six people) reporting hearing the hymn Abide With Me. Remember, these were old people; the average age was 78. In a lecture, Dr. Nick Warner, one of the authors of the original study, conjectured t ... (more)

What is your VC listening to on his iPod?

I must admit I suffer from insomnia and on occasion take Ambien to help me get to sleep.  The only problem with Ambien is that you must lay down, if you don’t you won’t fall asleep and won’t remember what you did while you were on the medication.  I have written several blog posts on Ambien that caused me to cringe when I awoke to read them for the first time.  So in keeping with these Ambien induced blog posts,  I emailed several prominent venture capitalists and asked them several questions about their iPods (don’t ask me why - I can’t recal ... Keeping Track of Mitch ? Inaugural email #1Sunday, 18 September 2005Hello all,This is Mitch. the US infrastructure

Recently the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) released a report on the US infrastructure and specifically looked at dams. The ASCE gave the dams and infrustructure a D grade. I have repeatdly posted warnings of a coming collapse of the US infrastructure (even without reaching maxium consumption of world petroleum reserves or realistic acccessable petroleum). Over the last decade the infrastructure has been relatively ignored. In many cases the infrastructure was not just ignored but actually the victim of budget cuts on local and national levels so as to appease over taxed voters. T ... (more)

Dell Launches Flash-Memory Music Player

Dell Inc., Tuesday launched a new flash-memory digital music player designed to compete with the iPod Shuffle. Dell says its DJ Ditty is a better value than the Shuffle. Both devices are $99 and come equipped with 512 megabytes of memory, but because the Ditty uses an audio format that compresses digital music files more efficiently, Dell asserts the Ditty can hold up to 220 songs while the same-sized Shuffle stores about 120.
