Good player - get the online upgrade!
I bought an mp3 player to listen to on my morning subway commute, as well as when I lift weights at the gym. I bought the iRiver 799 after comparing it with the iPod Mini for about a month. It came down to weight and battery life. Price was also a factor in the end. Three weeks later, I am happy with my purchase.
So far, I am impressed with the battery life. Though it didn't last 40 hours on one AA, it still lasted pretty long. I also did play with it a lot in this period. That said, the menus and interface take a few days to learn and I still refer to the instruction manual on occasion. The player is very light weight and small-- much more compact than the iPod mini. I don't create playlists on the player itself. Instead, I create them on my computer and transfer them easily (and quickly) via Windows Media Player or Musicmatch. Though I use them less frequently, the FM radio and voice recording are nice bonuses.
The player comes with plenty of accessories, though they are all pretty mediocre. I don't use the armband, as the way that the player attaches to the it seems clumsy. I do use the soft plastic case that comes with it, as it protects the player from scratches, etc., but it's pretty cheap and ugly. I use my own headphones, so I cannot comment on the ones packaged with the player.
Like some other reviewers, I was initially very disappointed with the shuffle mode. I loaded about 250 songs, but the player shuffled through only 20 songs in the same order. However, after navigating the iRiver website, I found that you can update the player online, which solves the shuffle problem. It was easy to do, even over my modem connection, and I haven't had a problem since.
Overall, if you are looking for cute and flashy, get the iPod mini, but if you are looking for reasonably priced mp3 player with multiple functions, this is a good choice.
No Complaints!
I have had this player for roughly 3 months now, and it's great! I am a newbie with the whole MP3 player thing, so I wasn't sure how I would adapt to it. After days of deciding which one I wanted I chose this particular one. Reason being, I definetly wanted an FM radio. Radio plays OK, not the best, but it's listenable...when I'm tired of my own files. The player was easy to understand and connect to the computer...I had NO PROBLEMS. One other good thing about this player, is the batteries are just regular double AA, so you don't have to go searching or you don't have to charge any up...just buy a pack and it will last a long time! The battery life is great also...but it does take up more juice when you are transferring songs to the player. Microphone works good too! I would totally recomment this product for people like me, who aren't familiar with these gadgets!
Great product in a small package
I usually do my homework before I purchase. I chose this for it's portability, use of common AA batteries,(never have to send it in for a battery replacement at big $). and the ability to record off of outside sources as well as sound quality.
On all of these points I was not disappointed. I looked at the HD players but deemed them to fragile for active use and running through airports, so I chose the 1GB flash model.
The sound quality is good although I upgraded to a "normal" set of ear phones from the small ear buds.
Set up was a breeze and so was the initial firmware upgrade.
Uploading MP3's was also very easy with the drag and drop.
I can't rave enough about this player. Stick it in my pocket and GO!
Some complaints were about small buttons and large hands, well I will tell you I have large mechanic hands and I have no problem at all managing.
The only change I would make is a larger enclosed carry case, I don't like the one included, and would like somewhere to carry all the accessories at the same time, and the arm band case is too small for my arms, I am a little oversize in the upper body. But the neck strap or just stick it in my pocket works well.
All in all I would recommend this to anyone who wants a great product in a small package with great sound quality.
