Love it but a wire problemI know this is my fault, but I didn't "install" the unit using any clips. I just slip it into the little casette holder under my radio and pull it out when evern I adjust it. The attenna wire leading into the unit needs to be wiggled about once a week or it shorts out. I'm sure if I installed it properly this wouldn't be a problem.
Customer support was great and mailed me a new attenna. No charge!
LOVE the service. Life changing, I used to dread my 45 minute drive to work, now I love it. It's fun hearing CNN and FOX cover the same stories with different spins. I'm listening a lot more bluegrass and heavy metal now.
Anyone know of any good bluegrass metal bands?
Great little radioAs I was new to satellite radio, I had no preferences between the XM or Sirius lines. Roughly the same price, and roughly the same services. What tipped me to XM was the radio hardware. The Delphi radios have the best features/price ratio I think and they only work on XM.
The Roady2 comes with everything you need to set it up in your car. I also bought the home use package as that was going to be my primary location. Everything works as advertised.
The Roady2 doesn't have to direct connect to your car stereo or home stereo. It senses if it is hardwire connected and if it isn't, it turns on a built in FM modulator. Others have written that the FM Modulator sound isn't as good as a direct connect; but to my middleaged ears there wasn't enough difference to worry about. The only negative, and it's minor, is that to switch from direct connect to FM modulator, you have to turn off the roady2 disconnect and reboot it. (I've found that I do this more than I expected, for instance if I want to listen in the kitchen, I can use the FM modulator and listen with the kitchen radio. I now use FM modulation all the time, but I would prefer to use direct connect most of the time as I live in an apartment bldg and I worry about disturbing my neighbors radio reception - but no complaints so far.)
I also like how the 30 presets are implemented. they are grouped into the "A" bank, the "B" bank, and the "C" bank, each with 10 presets. I've set A to all news channels, B to music, and C to miscellaneous channels. The Scan button will scan through a given bank (but not through ALL XM channels). I like this feature a lot.
The auto antenna doesn't have to be placed on the outside of the car. The dashboard loacation works fine in Northern Florida. I've found that if it starts to get "staticy" moving the antenna from one side of the dash to the other usually takes care of it.
There are only 2 negatives
1) it can't be used as a personal portable radio, it needs an electrical outlet of some sort. An adapter is sold at $149 but I think that's pretty expensive for a unit that costs less than $100.
2) I have found that the home antenna from the home kit REALLY needs to face the southern sky. It doesn't like stuff (like walls)in front of it. There is an opportunity here for a 3rd party to develop a more sensitive home antenna.
Very Nice CompromiseI have more nice things to say about the Roady 2 than I do XM radio, which has taken a great concept and minimalized it. I bought mine so I could listen to news channels in the car on long trips so I wouldn't be zipping out of range constantly.
The Roady 2 works very well in the car once the mobile antenna is in place. The displays change color and it's easy to dial up various stations, most of which are junk. XM is geared more to kids, which is a mistake because I think many of them prefer iPODs.
Of all the XM receivers, this is the one to get. The FM transmitter works well at home or in the car and it's kind of relaxing to listen to Fox News or CNN.
I hope they don't discontinue this model because I think many people overlook the transmitter. If you need a radio to pick up overpriced radio signals, this is the way to go. XM recently raised its prices to pay for two idiots named Opie and Anthony who really are worse (by a long shot) than Wayne's World.
